Unboxing and Review of the Bluetimes M8 Amlogic S802, Quad Core Android TV Box

Hello everyone!!!

I welcome you with the first Amlogic S802 device released a while back ago. It is called the M8 and this variant that was sent to me is made by the Chinese android tv box and powerbank manufactyrer called Bluetimes.

It is the square model and has some pretty good specs. These include:

  • CPU: Quad Core Amlogic s802 running at 2.0 Ghz
  • GPU: Octa Core Mali-450MP8
  • RAM: 1GB/2GB
  • ROM: 8GB
  • WIFI: 802.11 b/g/n
  • Android KitKat 4.4.2
  • Full H/W Acceleration XBMC Support
  • 4k Video Playback

So as you can see we are talking for a pretty capable device.

The packaging is very nice and basic and it includes:

  • The M8 itself
  • An Ir Remote
  • An HDMI Cable (Gold Plated)
  • An A/C Adapter
  • A User Manual

Looking at the M8 we see that it has a nice mate finish on top along with the logo that changes colour according to the angle it sees the light

Looking at the side we see the normal sized sd card slot

And on the back we have the various ports the M8 gives us

These are:

  • 2x USB 2.0
  • HDMI 1.4
  • Ethernet
  • A/V Output
  • SPDIF Optical Audio Output
  • DC Input
The device has no heat issues and if we flip it upside down we can see the ventilation grills used to freshen up and cool the device

Let's talk about the software.

The M8 is running android 4.4.2 KitKat and it comes pre rooted

It also supports OTA updates via the included update app

The mediabox launcher we have all been familiar with is also present and it gives a colourful taste to the overall experience

In the settings the four usual tabs are always there and they provide us with some very useful settings, so let's take a look.

The Network Tab gives us information about our wireless networks and the ethernet connection

Although the wifi reception was excellent, the speed was very slow due to the fact that the sample sent to me was an engineering sample meaning that it was a test unit. The retail unit does not have these problems.

The Display Tab allow us to choose our HDMI mode. Here we can see that the amlogic s802 has a native 4k resolution adjustment

Next we can find the Advanced Tab where miracast is available as well as the audio settings

And lastly we have the Other Tab giving us the ability to update our system in case a newer firmware is available and it also dispays information about out current android version, kernel and device name.

As always you can install the launcher of your choice so i went ahead and installed the nova launcher because i like the stock android feeling

Video Playback is also exceptional and XBMC runs perfectly fine even when playing high bitrate 1080p and 4k video files.

So let me share my final thoughts to you guys.

The M8 is a great device for those who want to use it as a media player. The lack of 2GB ram is not very obvious and you can run just about everything on it. Heat issues are not present and it is a great budget option if you are looking for something newer and powerful. I cannot compare it with some top devices like the minix neo x8-h but it gets the job done.
