Review of the Vigica V5 Quad Core Amlogic S805

Vigica has released a new Amlogic S805 device especially for XBMC. That doen't mean that you can't use it to do other tasks as it runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

This gives you ability to download a very wide variety of android apps found in the Play Store.

The Amlogic S805 is essentially a cost down version of the previous S802. The only difference to my eyes though is the lack of 4k video playback which personally i don't need.

In the box:
In the package you get

  • The Vigica V5 itself
  • An A/C Adapter
  • A User Manual
  • An HDMI Cable
  • An IR Remote

Hardware & Looks
The device has a rectangular shape with a black plastic on the front. At first i thought that it would provide some info like date and time, playback e.t.c. Well it didn't but there is a function led showing when the device is powered on

Review of the CS918II RK3288 Android TV Box by Gearbest.com (WITH DISCOUNT COUPON)

Lately i had the chance to review some RK3288 devices, one of them is the succesor of the famous CS918 which was powered by the older RK3188 Rockchip processor.

I am talking about the CS918II of course which returned more powerfull than ever before. This time the newer model sports the latest RK3288 processor by Rockchip and it doesn't have the h/w acceleration limitations the previous cpu had. I am talking about xbmc of course because as we all remember to playback 1080p videos needed some work to be done and you couldn't play them out of the box. This is not the case here and everything runs great, back first let's talk about the looks and hardware of the device.

Hardware
The CS918II has a very nice blue colour accompanied with grey and black as well giving it a very stylish appearence

Rikomagic MK902II sporting the new RK3288 SOC

Rikomagic is prepping an Android 4.4 ready “MK902II” mini-PC claimed to be three times faster than earlier models thanks to its Cortex-A17 Rockchip RK3288.

Rikomagic’s MK902II is set to arrive in June, only a few months after the company launched its first mini-PC versions of the previously HDMI stick form-factor media players. The Android 4.4-focused MK902II has the same footprint as the recent MK902 and very similar, Ubuntu Linux-based MK902 LE. Rikomagic has yet to announce a Linux version of the MK902II, although like the MK902, the MK902II can run Linux as well.

Ugoos UT3 with the RK3288 inside

Ugoos is readying a “UT3″ media player mini-PC that will run Android 4.4 on a Rockchip quad-core, Cortex-A17 RK3288 SoC, and will support 4K video output.

The Ugoos UT3 is a follow-on to the recent Ugoos UT2 Android media player box, which runs Android 4.2.2 on Rockchip’s 1.6GHz, quad-core RK3188 system-on-chip. The UT3 moves up to the ARM Cortex-A17 based, quad-core Rockchip RK3288, which was announced in February. The only other Cortex-A17 SoC announced to date is Mediatek’s octa-core MT6595, which combines four 2.5GHz Cortex-A17 cores with four 1.7GHz Cortex-A7 cores.

pcDuino8, an Allwinner A80 board

The makers of the recently-launched pcDuino3 single board computer are already working on a next-generation model with a more powerful processor.

LinkSprite and Allwinner have announced that the upcoming pcDuino8 will features an Allwinner A80 octa-core processor.

Allwinner A80 octa-core chip coming next month

Allwinner has announced that the first products featuring its new octa-core processors should arrive by the end of the second quarter of 2014. The Chinese chip maker also says its A80 Optimus Board developer platform should ship in May.

The Allwinner UltraOcta A80 features an 8-core CPU with 4 ARM Cortex-A15 cores and 4 lower-power Cortex-A7 cores. The chip uses ARM big.LITTLE technology and heterogenous computing so that you can use all 8 CPU cores at once when needed, while using a combination of fewer cores most of the time to conserve power.

MK902 Quad Core RK3188 mini pc

Rikomagic has spun a mini-PC version of its quad-core Cortex-A9 Rockchip RK3188-based MK802 stick computers that run Android or Ubuntu, starting at $105.

The same week that Rockchip launched a new quad-core Cortex-A17 RK3288 system-on-chip, one of its earliest and most successful customers has eeked out some more life from the Cortex-A9 based RK3188. Rikomagic was one of the first and most successful of the wave of low-cost Android-ready, media player oriented HDMI stick computers that began to appear at the beginning of this decade. Now, it has launched a larger, more I/O rich miniPC alternative to its Android-based MK802IV. There’s also a very similar Ubuntu Linux-based MK802IV LE.

Rockchip RK3288 Specifications

On February Rockchip announced the RK3288 SoC, which combines four ARM Cortex-A17 cores with a 4- or 16-core Mali-T7xx GPU, a 4Kx2K video decoder, and HDCP2.x security.

Rockchip is the second chipmaker to jump on ARM’s recently announced Cortex-A17 processor design, after MediaTek’s octa-core MT6595 system-on-chip. This heir to the quad-core, Cortex-A9 RK3188, which fuels Android stick computers like the Rikomagic MK802IV and Ugoos UM2, was tipped at CES as being a Cortex-A12 processor. However, Rockchip instead converted the SoC to the similarly 32-bit Cortex-A17.

MediaTek's new ARM Cortex-A17

On February ARM unveiled a Cortex-A17 core for midrange mobile devices, which will appear first in a MediaTek MT6595 octa-core SoC that includes four 2.5GHz -A17 cores.

ARM compares the Cortex-A17 with the Cortex-A9, claiming 60 percent faster performance and improved power and area efficiency. Yet, it also appears intended as an update to the newer Cortex-A15 processor IP design. The Cortex-A15 turned out to consume more power than expected, and initially had troubles in the implementation of its most significant new feature: Big.Little interoperability on a single chipset with Cortex-A7 cores. The Cortex-A17 is similarly designed to support SoCs with up to four cores, as well as in Big.Little hybrids using the -A7, with the help of its CoreLink CCI-400 Cache Coherent Interconnect, says ARM. It is said to fully support Global Task Switching (GTS), enabling power and performance optimizations for each core, a feature that was unavailable on the first Big.Little hybrids, such as the Samsung Exynos 5420 Octa-core.

Baidu presents their Amlogic S802D TV Box

Baidu already has a TV-Stick powered by the Dual Core Amlogic MX and now they presented its substitute, a flat-Box which incorporates one of the new Amlogic SOCS, specifically it uses the S802D which has certified support for Dolby 5.1 Audio.

TCL T2 another android console, this time sporting the Allwinner A31

After liberalization in China, android game consoles are living a sweet moment and now a multinational company called TCL decided to launch a console intended for Chinese market. The TCL T2 is a small console that stands out for its simplicity and includes a gamepad with a design "inspired" by the OUYA one.

3D graphics support for Rockchip RK3188 devices on Linux

Developers have been porting Ubuntu and other operating systems to run on tablets and TV boxes with Rockchip RK3188 quad-core chips since mid-2013. The RK3188 chip is one of the fastest ARM Cortex-A9 processors around, and Ubuntu is surprisingly snappy on devices with the processor… but up until now there’s been no Linux support for hardware-accelerate graphics.
That means that while web browsers, office apps, and other basic software run well on a device like the MK802 IV LE, up until now it’s been tough to play 3D games or run some other apps using Linux on this type of device.

Now a group of developers have added initial support for hardware-accelerated graphics.

A very stylish EZCast Adaptor

Everyone likes the look and design of this miracast adapter called TS-02. It stands up from the crowd for its unique design using a leather finish and a discreet golden colour. I am curious about this design choice, because these adapters are often not visible given that they are placed behind your tv set. Other highlights are the external antenna and low price

How to fix your MK802 IV Android mini PC's WiFi performance

Over the past year Android TV sticks have gotten more and more powerful, while prices continue to drop. These days you can get a device that fits in the palm of your hand, has a quad-core processor, and lets you run Android apps on a TV for well under $100.

But one problem that plagues many of these little devices is poor WiFi reception. Some models are better than others, but I got so tired of testing Android mini-computers that didn’t work in my office that I recently invested in a WiFi range extender for the house.

Fortunately some device makers have been paying attention and adding features such as external antennae to improve performance. Sometimes there are easy ways to fix models without an external antenna though.

The folks at Rikomagic, for example, noticed that you can dramatically improve WiFi performance on the MK802 IV just by moving the antenna inside the case.

Retailer W2Comp sent me an MK802 IV demo unit a while back, but I’ve been a bit too busy to test it. Incidentally, W2Comp sells the device for $76.

It’s a small Android device with a Rockchip RK3188 ARM Cortex-A9 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, an HDMI connector, USB 2.0 port, and 2 micro USB ports (one of which is used for power).

Today I finally followed Rikomagic’s advice and cracked open the case to see if moving the antenna really does help improve WiFi performance. The short answer? It does.

The first thing I did was to plug the MK802 IV into my monitor, hook up a keyboard and mouse, and install the Network Signal Info app. I did this before moving the antenna.

At first, I saw signal strength of 60 to 70 percent. Then I unplugged the WiFi range extender in my office and watched the signal strength plummet down to 36 percent.

It didn’t stay there — that’s about as high as it got, but the signal occasionally dipped lower and from time to time the MK802 IV simply disconnected itself from my wireless network.

I didn’t have much hope that moving around the antenna would change things. But Rikomagic had assured me it would. So I unplugged the device and pried open the case (it’s tough to do this without breaking off some of the plastic — but basically if you run a fingernail, credit card, or other thin (and preferably not sharp or metallic) item along the edge of the case you should be able to do this without causing serious damage.

This is what my device looked like with the case open.

While a 100 percent signal would be even more exciting, this is a strong enough signal to stream videos, surf the web, make video calls, or do just about anything else without fear of losing the internet connection.

Not bad, considering my WiFi router is on the first floor of the house and my office is on the third.

This solution clearly won’t work for every Android TV stick. But if you happen to have a Rikomagic MK802 IV and you have trouble holding onto an internet signal, you might want to open the case and try moving the antenna.

There’s one interesting side note to this story. Rikomagic also recently issued a software update for the MK802 IV that upgrades the device from Android 4.1 to Android 4.2.2. It’s also supposed to optimize WiFi performance and offer a few other improvements — but I find that my signal strength is actually weaker after the upgrade.

I wrote most of the above article while running Android 4.1. After updating to Android 4.2, my signal strength dropped to about 51 percent.
